Known for its long range and high accuracy, the Barrett M99 “Big Shot” is a single-shot bolt-action rifle that uses the .50 BMG round. The rifle offers impressive power with every pull of the trigger, and with a cartridge that is over 5 inches long, it packs quite a punch. The Barrett M99 features a bullpup design that places the action behind the trigger assembly, allowing for a shorter overall rifle while maintaining a suitable barrel length for long-range accuracy.
Even with the bullpup design, the Barrett 50 Cal is still a hefty firearm. The Barrett M99 can be equipped with either a 29-inch fluted barrel or 32-inch heavy barrel, bringing the total length of the rifle to 47 inches or 50 inches with a weight of 23 or 25 pounds, respectively. Based on a scaled-up version of the Springfield .30-06 cartridge, the .50 BMG features a casing that is just under 4 inches long, with a total cartridge length of 5.45 inches. The larger size allows the .50 BMG to provide significantly higher muzzle energies of between 10,000 and 15,000 foot-pounds at over 3,000 feet per second, depending on the specific ammunition, compared to the 2,000 to 3,000 foot-pounds of the .30-06 round. The .50 BMG cartridges are available in numerous types for civilian or military use, from standard ball rounds to tracers, armor piercing, incendiary, and explosive rounds. The .50 BMG cartridge can be accurate to over a mile with a skilled shooter.
